Well, i've bought a PSP Slim some days ago...

I think that's a stupid question but....

And i don't understand one little thing about all of this. The PSP have an infrared sensor or anything like that?
Or I just don't need anything more but a IR keyboard?

Anyone can make me understand this?

Hello there!

The answer is that there is an IR port on the old PSP fat. (PSP 1000).

Sony removed the IR port in models 2000+.

It's such a shame they've done this. I homebrew enabled my PSP to specificly have IR caperbilities such as piKey and iRShell. Oh well...

How about install an USB keyboard with a Mini-USB Adaptor?  Grin
No way to work, right?

At the moment not.
According to rumors SONY is working on a USB keyboard (damn cant find the article on QJ.net)
According to rumors somebody has already connected a standard keyboard to the PSP's USB port
but most probably the Serial-Keyboard (SIO) is the only hope Sad
It plugs into the Remote but i never fond real instructions to build one Sad(

//EDIT
Found It on Gamespot

Just to clear some stuff up...

-  USB support will never happen. The PSP cannot physicly support a keyboard. A guy did a full detail debug of it. Wink
-  The Logic/Sony keyboard was anounced years ago together with Gran Turismo Mobile. Nothing...

This is a way however for a PSP Slim to have input from a keyboard this is done via SIO. Serial I/O connects where the headphone socket is.

SIO was in piKey 0.1 - 0.3. It was included in the unofficial 0.4 however it didn't work. The Unofficial piKey Team have scrapped SIO in the unofficial piKey 0.5 release since none of the team can test it.

This however has NOT been forgoten. To guys over at PS2Dev forums are working specificly into piKey SIO support. Jube and Jean.

Jube works in the generic SIO input.

Jean works in customizing an Xbox chatpad to work with your PSP.

There is also a no MOD project, but I don't know much about it:

I plan to release my work to them so they can build on their projects. Smiley

I hope that cleans up any queries!

Hmm, interesting.
I thought the USB thingy could mainly not happen because the PSP does not supply power to external devices
so a standard USB device could not be used.
But since the PSP can support a GPS-reciver and a Camera it must be possible to have some kind of input from an external device.
Maybe external keyboards simply need an external power supply? =(

Well. In any case i dont know nearly enough to even attempt to build my own ^^

I don't think it's so much of a power issue it's more to do with drivers. The USB hasn't the ability to accept functions from a keyboard via USB.

It sounds weird since the PSP can connect to a camera and GPS device, but that is what it boils down to.

If it could be done that easily, then why have people spend so much time into IR/SIO inputs.

it would be possible via a host controller at the usb end.... but thats alot of work that alot of people are not willing to do...

that is why SIO/IR keyboards are being used rather than people building host controllers.

although i think a host controller to support usb drives would be nice Smiley might be slow though  Undecided

Let's think about this. The PSP has 3 data inputs, IR, SIO and USB.

There has been amazing coders on the PSP scene including Fanjita (the main coder of piKey 0.3).

Surly if this could be done, it would have been done ages ago. I don't think USB can be done maybe because of lack of power, but more so, purely because it just can't be done.

Anyway, it's pointless going on about USB as that won't happen.

I ttend to belive that its simply to complicated for the enduser
to build and programm a USB controller that takes a standard USB device ads a power source
and connects it to the PSP's USBport.
most of us have serious problems when it comes allone to connect a home build headset (shivers when he looks at his adapter)
or hardmod the Battery to a Pandora

Perfectly summerized Loonix!

SIO requires some soldering too and the amount on emails I recieve regarding IRDA (which requires no wiring at all!) is unbelievable!

Hi,

on my opinion irda is ****!!! I don't want to criticize any user at the forum. But Irda has a very limited range and so i would say it has a invisible wire. Wink

It is poor to see that more and more devices are getting a bluetooth function, but not the PSP. Sony is selling the PSP 3000 with "stupid" upgrades and propagades the display as a "super" display... Very Poor SONY!!! I know that Sony will release a new PSP in some years. And I hope that the PSP has more and better hardware functions.

If I have the alternative between a usb or a irda keyboard i would choose the usb keyboard.
USB keyboards are cheap and you can use the normal size of a keyboard.

I agree with your views on Sony there Florian, I think that they could have done so much more with the PSP. It had so much potential and they went ahead and stabbed it in the heart.

Sony is failing with it's consoles. The PSP is dying, the PS3 is too much, their TV's are over priced and don't look at their consumers.

If only Dark_AleX was the CEO of SCE Sony for a week...

As for your view about keyboards, I also have to agree. USB / SIO are better because the keyboards are much bigger and they are a lot more cheaper. However the disadvantage to this is that it has to be modified it in some way for it to work with the PSP.

At least with IR, it's just plug line up and play!
