So I upgraded to 3.90 M33 on my classic PSP, and I had a thought about future FW upgrades- how do they work? What happens to the "network update" option?

First enter recovery mode by switching psp right down and holding R trigger on start up, check you have M33 network update selected and exit.

The M33 network update works exactly the same as the Sony one but the M33 team have edited the link to their server rather than Sony's.

If your on 3.90M33-3 their is on update so it will say your on the latest available firmware.

Hey, that's clever! So when I select the network update option, the M33 firmware updates itself, instead of accessing Sony?

Does it work in the same way as the official FW updates? Like, download, plug in AC, install, remove update file?

Yes it work in the EXACT same way as Sony, only that it accesses Dark_AleX's server instead of Sony's server.

Sony's updates just change number.

M33 updates may change numer or version. Sometime BOTH!

E.g:

3.71 M33 --> 3.90 M33 - 3

Pretty cool eh!

TIP: The updater will not install the 1.50 addon expansion pack. That must be done manualy. With that said, the 1.50 kernel isn't used anymore.  Smiley

Devs should update it!

PS2Dev (The place where PSP dev lives) can't stress how much 1.50 should be abolished.

Updating to 3.XX isn't hard at all!

As long as the source is avaliable, I'll be happy to help people port applications. Smiley

I do not want to convert this topic into a debate Angelo. I agree in the fact that everything nowadays should be coded based in the 3.xx kernel however only the old 1.50 based homebrew which source is still available can be ported to it. You will have to agree with me that there still much of this 1.50 based homebrew which sources are not available and hence still require the 1.50 kernel addon to run.
For a list of nice homebrew check this blog's article on PSP homebrew. You'll see that many of them are great homebrew examples and cannot be ported (and in fact have not been).

Alternatively most of it can also be run on Slim PSPs (and Fat with/withouth the 1.50 addon installed as well) using the Noobz Team eLoader v1.000. Nevertheless I find more convenient installing the 1.50 kernel addon rather than having to launch the eLoader each time I need to run any of those applications.

Fair point WaKaRu... I cannot argue with that, but devs MUST now port their applications. It's only fair on Slim users.

It really isn't hard from a programming point of view! I lately converted piKey's EBOOT's to multi kernel. They now both run on either 3.XX or 1.50.

Since the Slim's launch, PSP programming has become MUCH more easier. I highly recommend people give PSP programming a go. It's great fun and helps you get more logical!

I spent the WHOLE weekend programming once and I was super quick in my maths class!  Grin

I would love to learn programming but where to start...you tell me you need an engine machined, reworked, and overhauled and I can do that. Or to solve an electrical problem as to why it's runs like a lawn mower can do that too. PSP programming I would love to learn

OK, do you want to start of with basics and work your way up? This means:

-  Learning a scripting language called LUA and getting the basics of how programming works. You can code basic programs and games.

(No setup required and recommended.)

Or...

-  Jump into the deep end and learn C and do REAL PSP programming and make PRX plugins and EBOOTs.

(A LOT of setup required and not recommened unless you already know C.)

I suggest you go to http://www.psp-programming.com/forums/ for help. Smiley
