Hi there, bought my son a PSP, and, as I was not competent enough to do it myself, sent it to a friend who `knew what they were doing`!

Left it with him a few days, only to be told he couldnt get a game to load. We have since try ourselves without success, even though that my son was playing an original game in the car on the way to drop it off.

Any ideas  as to what may be causing this problem?

Also all my sons user information, username etc are not showing now.

It is still showing the firmware to be 2.81 though.

Thanks for any help given with this.

I'd suggest you update to 3.50 Official firmwire, and downgrade using Lumines (If you were planning to downgrade)
Ooh, and get the update off the net and don't use the network update since it will give you the 3.51 update.

Cheers!

If your PSP doesn´t load the games it probably has a Hardware problem, and most likely to do with the UMD Lens mechanism.
This problem is quite common when the PSP is dropped while playing a UMD Game or watching a UMD movie.
If that´s the case you will NOT be able to downgrade using lumines or gta game since your UMD drive cannot read the discs properly.
Your only option is to get it repaired.

If you have problem with your system as the following :
  • System shows a message "Disc Read Errors" or disc appeares damaged or dirty on the screen.
  • System reads certain games or movies.
  • System loads games or movies longer than normal.
  • System reads games or movies and seems to be freezed or skipped.

Changing new laser lens will bring your system back to normal again. It´s not very cheap though.... it might be worth do buy the spare part and do it yourself (there is a guide somewhere onlline, http://www.consolezombie....SP_Laser_Replacement.html Have a look at it to find out if you are capable of doing it yourself).

That kinda made me think the problem is in the software, bad flash or something...

Well, it makes kind of sense ... He would not loose a lot by upgrading to a higher firmware to see if the problem resolves itself by just doing that, although I would suggest to upgrade to 3.03 instead, since this way he would double his chances for downgrading (by finding either the GTA:LCS unpatched game or Lumines, so he could use either downgrader).
